For the Fall 2016 semester, USC has extended its program with Uber as part of the Campus Cruiser program in the University Park neighborhood nightly, from 7 PM until 2 AM, whenever wait periods for a Campus Cruiser exceed 15 minutes.* This is designed to supplement the popular Campus Cruiser service and help reduce wait times for transportation during these peak periods.
* The Uber availability hours may be occasionally adjusted to accommodate a USC special event. USC Transportation will notify campus community of designated special events via email.
How It Works
Nightly between 7:00 PM and 2:00 AM, if you call Campus Cruiser and the wait time exceeds 15 minutes, the dispatcher will invite you to request a free Uber ride via the USC button on the Uber app. During these hours, rides that stay entirely within Campus Cruiser boundaries will be paid for automatically by USC, but only if requested via the USC button. The program also will be available on football game days beginning four and a half hours after kick off until 2:00 AM.
All rides requested via the USC button will be uberPOOL trips. uberPOOL is a carpooling option that matches riders heading in the same direction. Please note that you are able to bring one other person in your party, and driver-partners will wait for a maximum of two minutes. Excessive surge fares may not be covered.
NEW UBER USERS: Sign up online at get.uber.com/go/uscfall2016 and download the Uber app on your phone. You must use your @usc.edu email address in your profile. You will then be able to see the USC button at the bottom of your Uber app when on campus.
EXISTING UBER USERS: Enter the promo code USCFALL2016 into the Promotions section of your Uber app and update your profile with your @usc.edu email address. This will unlock the USC button on your Uber app.
Staying Uber Safe
Uber provides a great alternative option for getting around within the Campus Cruiser boundaries when Campus Cruiser is busy; read on for important tips on how to maximize safety when using Uber.
TRAVEL IN PAIRS: Travel with a friend – the “safety in numbers” concept really works, especially if your judgment is impaired.
VERIFY YOUR DRIVER AND CAR: Once you have requested an Uber ride, you can view the partner-driver’s rating. You can cancel the ride without a charge if you’re not comfortable with the partner-driver’s rating. When your ride arrives, make sure the partner-driver’s photo, license plate number, and vehicle description match. Never take a ride you did not request or get into a car that doesn’t match the details provided by the Uber app.
GO THE EXTRA MILE: The Uber app’s “share your ETA” function allows you to invite friends to see your trip in real-time. The app will draft a text message you can share with friends that includes your ETA and a link to a live map that allows them to track your trip. Too much effort? Call a pal and stay on the line while you’re in the car instead.

- The USC button will ONLY be available daily between 7:00 PM and 2:00 AM when you are within the Campus Cruiser boundaries and you have a @usc.edu email address in your profile.
- Campus Cruiser will still run during these times and Uber should only be used when the wait for Campus Cruiser is over 15 minutes. Please use appropriately.
- Rides requested via the USC button must remain within the Campus Cruiser boundaries. Rides that either begin or end OUTSIDE of the Campus Cruiser boundaries will NOT be paid for by USC.
- You must request your ride from the USC button in the Uber app in order for USC to cover the cost of the ride.
- Excessive surge fares may not be covered.
- If you cancel your ride more than five minutes after requesting, you will be charged a $5 cancellation fee.

Q: I don’t see the USC button in my Uber app. What’s up?
A: The USC button will only be visible from 7:00 PM to 2 AM. If you still don’t see it during those time periods, you probably need to change your email to your @usc.edu address and enter the USCFALL2016 promo code in the Promotions section of the Uber app.
Q: I don’t have an iPhone, Android or Windows smartphone. How do I use Uber?
A: Currently, the only way to schedule a USC paid Uber ride is through the app. If you do not have a compatible smartphone, you can still use Campus Cruiser.
Q: Can I use Uber on campus?
A: Since a USC ID is required to access campus after 8PM, partner-drivers will only be able to access campus to drop off students. Partner-drivers will not be allowed to enter campus to perform a pick-up, except at designated gates. Campus Cruisers will continue to have full access to the University Park Campus and can pick up and drop off anywhere on campus.
