USC and the City of Los Angeles offer many transportation options that service the campus and the surrounding area. Through strategic partnerships with Metro, Metrolink, and LADOT we can offer services like monthly pass renewal through our offices in the McCarthy Structure and pre-tax transit passes for staff. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is unique among the nation’s transportation agencies. It serves as transportation planner, coordinator, designer, builder and operator for one of the country’s largest, most populous counties. More than 9.6 million people – nearly one-third of California’s residents – live, work, and play within its 1,433-square-mile service area.

Metro:  Graduate Student U-Pass

USC Transportation offers the U-Pass pilot program in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The reduced fare transit pass offer graduate students unlimited rides on Metro’s rail and bus lines for a given semester.

Only graduate students are eligible to purchase the U-Pass. Undergraduates, postdocs, faculty and staff are not eligible.


Fall 2019 passes are $ 120.75 (plus new card) fee and are valid for use from August 12, 2019 to January 19, 2019. Passes must be picked up or reloaded in person. Sales open August 12, 2019. Sales close September 12, 2019. (No passes will be sold after this date). Passes can be picked up or reloaded starting August 12 at the locations listed below.


NOTE: Summer 2019 passes will remain valid until August 25, 2019. If you wish to renew for Fall 2019 please bring your current U-Pass card and payment to the Transportation office so that it can be reloaded.

To purchase a U-Pass:

  1. Take the Metro survey:
  2. Purchase the U-Pass:  (create an account to purchase U-Pass)
  3. Gather up the following items:
  • Metro survey confirmation page
  • U-Pass confirmation page
  • USC student ID
  1. Pick up your U-Pass:
  • UPC pick up: Transportation office, Mon – Thur., 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • HSC pick up: 1975 Zonal Ave. , Mon – Thur., Noon – 1 p.m. ONLY


No refunds will be granted at any time for any reason. If the pass does not work, please report to the transportation office so that we can exchange it for a new one. We cannot issue refunds once cards have been purchased.



Often mistaken for Metro, Metrolink is a completely separate agency that operates the commuter trains in the six southern California counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, Orange, Los Angeles, and North San Diego to Oceanside.


The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) offers bus services through their DASH, Commuter Express, and CityRide programs.They also coordinate the closure of city streets for special events – like our own USC Trojan football games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum!
